Many of you know Lea DeLaria from Netflix’s Orange is The New Black; her lady loving ways and cutting wit as “Big Boo” have made her a household (Netflix households anyway) name.
But long before Boo and the interwebs even, DeLaria was a jazz musician. Her dad was actually a jazz pianist and social worker (musician and social worker, total lesbo..) and she’s currently working on her third album: House of David: DeLaria + Bowie = Jazz. It’s some of David Bowie’s greatest hits made into jazz! Believe me, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a butch in a blazer sing Fame with a jazz trio. Which, p.s., we got to do on Saturday night in Toronto.
Lea’s longtime comedy bestie Maggie Cassella put on an exclusive and fancy pop up concert to help DeLaria’s fundraiser for the album hit the mark and I was asked to photograph it! EEEee! I mean it was OK I guess, if you’re into awesome and all that.. as if the night needed more Scott Thompson and Paul Bellini (Kids in The Hall) were there! What? I know.
Anyway here are a few of the shots from that night, please forgive the grain in the concert photos, the space was super moody and candle lit (read: dark as fuck.)
You can still contribute to the album until June at: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/leadelaria
